Cat Training Demystified

by Kathrynn Kelley

So you have taken the big step towards pet ownership. You have decided on a cute, cuddly kitten, and you don't have a clue how to train it. Fortunately, cat training is simple and basic, and can be done very quickly. A cat is a fairly low-maintenance pet, and you will be thrilled with your decision to take on the responsibility once you have completed your kitten training.

When setting up a litter box, the first thing you must do is choose a central location. Cats like privacy in their litter box, so the location should be somewhat private, but also easy to access. You must be sure that it is not easily accessible by children, and if you are pregnant, you will have to get somebody else to clean it for you because of the risk of toxoplasmosis.

You can start cat training as soon as you've found a place for the litter box and filled it with sand. You should show your kitty where you've placed the litter box, and then leave him alone for a few minutes while he sniffs and scratches. In general, cats prefer to go to the bathroom in sandy places, so your cat will naturally know what to do when you put him in the litter box. He might not need to use it immediately, so wait a few minutes.

It's best not to expect that your kitties will automatically know how to use the litter box. There will probably be a few accidents while they are still learning. But don't fret. It's easy to clean cat urine out of carpet with a mixture of baking soda, white vinegar, dishwashing gel, and peroxide. Soak up most of the urine, then rub the paste in to the carpet. After letting it sit for an hour, vacuum it dry. This will keep odors at bay and eliminate the cat's desire to pee in the same spot again.

All of your cat training may go to nothing if you do not keep the litter box clean. Since cats by nature are very clean, a litter box that is in need of a cleaning is something that they are likely to avoid using. A dirty litter box may create a setback for you in your cat training. So the first thing to do before beginning cat training is to get that litter box cleaned up, then show your cat the clean box to begin the training. This should help your cat get into the habit of using the litter box rather than other places in the house.

Cat ownership can be very rewarding and fulfilling. Cats are bright and naturally curious. They are extremely fast learners, and once you begin training your cat, they will be an easy, low maintenance pet for years to come.

So, you have decided to take a big step and become a pet owner. You have chosen a cuddly kitten, but you don't know the first thing about training it. Fortunately for you, cat training is not difficult, and can be achieved quite quickly. Cats are fairly low maintenance, and once you have completed your kitten training, you will be ecstatic with the decision you have made to take on the responsibility. To take care of any litter training accidents, you can clean cat urine by applying a paste of baking soda, white vinegar, dishwashing gel, and peroxide, and then vacuuming up the mix after about an hour.
