What Do Bedbugs Look Like And Do They Only Stay In Beds?

by Thomas Proctor

Bedbugs are small, wingless insects that feed upon the blood of humans and animals. Bedbugs will seek out people as well as animals while they are sleeping at night, painlessly sucking out blood while the victim dozes.

How do bedbugs look? Although they are very small the normal human eye is able to see them. It is said that they are about the size of your pinky nail and come in two different colors which are sometimes a reddish color and sometimes a brownish color.

If given the chance they will feed on human blood just as well as they would feed on animal blood. How do bedbugs look when they reach adulthood? Normally adult bedbugs are in a size of about 1/4 of an inch. There have been times that people have mistaken cockroaches for bedbugs.

You may wonder what bedbugs look like before they reach adulthood. Well, newborn bed bugs, or nymphs, are almost exactly like adults. Really the only difference you will see is in their coloring. Nymphs are lighter in color and much smaller. Bedbugs are not capable of flight but can move rather quickly and like to climb everything.

The female bedbug lays the eggs usually in beds and carpets in isolated corners. She is able to lay at leas five eggs per day and almost 500 eggs all through her lifespan. Eggs will be generally small and it is white in color. You will have to use a magnifying glass to spot them. The egg will attach itself to whatever thing that comes in touch with them. Bedbugs are known to develop from nymph stage to the adult stage in normally less than a month's time.

Generally, you will find bedbugs nearby the source of food. In this case, that doesn't mean your kitchen. It means your bed. To find evidence of these critters, check for small dark blood stains or specks of bug waste near your mattress. You should also check the rug and the carpet for bugs. If you search for the bugs in all their hiding places, you should be able to avoid the ugly annoyance of bedbug bites.
