Tight And Firm Grips In Golf
It is much more common for golfers to hold the club too loosely than too tightly, except for people who are just starting to learn. So what we are really focusing on is keeping you from having a loose grip. You may think we are overdoing it, but that is just because you are used to doing it incorrectly with your loose grip.
Grasp the gold club just loosely enough to prevent your upper arm and shoulder muscles from tensing up and tiring out. Make sure your hands maintain a tight grip on the handle. Monitor your wrist tension when you swing. If your wrists are kept tight, your swing may be too stiff and mechanical while not allowing your wrists to break naturally.
Don't worry about the wrists. The usual problem is that the students don't put a strong enough grip on the club. When their grip is too loose, then a fault opening is created at the top which can cause the left wrist to collapse, the golfer to over-swing, and a number of other limiting problems. Even though a tight grip may be uncomfortable at first, it will greatly improve your swing and correct faults that will help your overall game.
When we say the golf club grip should be tight, in addition we mean that nearly every finger should be on the club. This refers to the last three, primarily, of your left hand, as well as the initial three on the right. A lot of golfers tend to put the forefinger of the right hand - which curves around the shaft directly beneath the right thumb - too loosely on the club. Avoid that.
You must keep the club from dropping down at the top of the swing. To do this, wrap the right index finger tightly around the shaft, so that is meets the thumb around the other side. This will keep the shaft from falling into the valley between index finger and thumb. Keep control of the swing from the back swing through the stroke.
Now, how do we stand up the ball? No great mystery is involved in this either, although certain points must be observed.
In golf the correct proper stance is an absolute must. You have to take a position that will enable you to swing to club back freely which will allow you bring it down to the ball on an inside-out arc very easily. The body should be slightly bent from the waist keeping your shoulders rounded or hunched and the knees slightly flexed. Take note that the weight should be equally divided between the feet and when flexing the knees it is better to flex to much rather than too little.
The head show be bowed, but not too much, but lowered instead of raised. The right shoulder should be lower than the left shoulder since the right hand is placed more far away from the shaft than the left hand is.
You now possess the knowledge of how to apply the correct amount of tension to your golf club grip. You also have learned how tight to hold the club and the proper stance. All you need now is practice!
