Easy Design Garden Features For Dummies

by Jackson Nimble

Looking at features you can place in your landscaping other than plantings, we're now going to discuss some more materials that aren't generally thought of as landscaping decor or accents. Common materials can be decorative additions to your landscape which can fill empty spots, create a feeling of depth, and give your lot a more complete appearance.

While elements such as storage sheds or lighting are not usually thought of as design materials, they can be. And a whole lot of others not considered here can be hand-crafted or found inexpensively at garage sales and flea markets. Without more delay, here are a few more ideal and creative ways to make your landscaping ideas and garden areas more livable and pleasing.

Garden buildings and Lean-tos: Such structures aren't commonly thought of as decor or focal points. They're created for keeping and cleaning your landscaping tools, starting plants, etc. However, potters sheds and other buildings are a lot more than functional; they can also be used as design elements that can beautify your landscaping and your home.

Your garden shed can be designed to compliment the architecture of your home. Lean-tos and garden sheds can have paint and trim which match the colors of your home or complement your garden color scheme. Add matching window boxes and you create a good sense of being finished.

Outdoor lighting: Low-voltage lighting can be extremely attractive along pathways and as decorative lights to highlight character trees, focal points, and other outstanding picture perfect landscaping features. Most important though, they can also add to your safety by lighting up potential problems and dark spots. Low voltage lighting is generally a simple and safe home owner project. However, sometimes it can require special wiring. In which case, you'll need a licensed electrician. Be sure to use a licensed electrician or landscape contractor certified in electrical work if you are planning to have High voltage lighting installed.

Berms: These are simply raised earthen garden areas. Surrounded with large timbers, block retaining walls, or free-standing, they are an attractive means in which you can create the perception or more area, a more three-dimensional site, in flat spots. They are great for controlling erosion and can also be good for creating privacy while waiting for your vegetation to get tall enough for private screening height. Berms should fit easily into your landscape, most common heights being from 1 1/2 to 2 feet above soil level.

So be mindful that not all of your plan has to be figured out. Things that you may not think to be design elements may help take up more space and reduce the amount of space you have to design.
